Inspects and functionally operates all endoscopy equipment and supplies, electrical power instruments and audiovisual equipment to ensure optimum safety and performance. Retrieves and labels all specimens during endoscopic procedures. Assists the physician and RN in the procedure rooms of the endoscopy suite under the direction of the Endoscopy Nurse Manager. Provides part time endoscopy technician services.
Ensures rooms are adequately stocked, cleaned and prepared prior to all procedures.
Hangs, sets up, troubleshoots and tests the function of the endoscopes (suction, air/water, irrigation, etc.) before the procedures begin.
Assists the physician in obtaining biopsies using forceps, snares, polyp traps, nets, electrocautery, stool aspiration, and deploying clips as needed, assists the RN in injections and tattooing as directed.
Numbers and labels all specimens, confirming all tissue is in each specimen jar, properly labels the pathology requisition, reviewing with the RN and/or physician as needed.
Provides abdominal pressure and patient positioning as needed and under the direction of the physician.
Performs bedside cleaning of scope, utilizing enzymatic and transports soiled scope to the decontamination room. Performs leak testing and manual brushing and cleaning of scope, adhering to strict infection control standards and manufacturer's recommendations.
Performs reprocessing of scopes using an Automated Endoscope Reprocessor (AER), is able to perform manual high level disinfection if necessary in the case of an equipment failure. Changes air, water and vapor filters, and performs waterline sanitization when scheduled for the AER.
Transports all supplies and equipment using proper body mechanics.
Provides patient care in observing and reporting any unusual conditions or occurrences to the RN or physician.
High School diploma or equivalent
Graduate of an approved Nurses Assistant, Medical Assistant or Surgical Technician program
Training in endoscopy equipment cleaning processes
At least 2 years of experience as Endoscopy Technician
