The Phlebotomy Laboratory Operations Supervisor supervises the activities of the outpatient phlebotomy lab located at 51 West 51st Street. This lab primarily supports the Columbia University Faculty Practice physicians located at 51 West 51st street. It also supports other affiliated offsite practices affiliated with Columbia University and Weill Cornell. This position reports both to the Senior Practice Manager for ColumbiaDoctors Midtown as well as the Director of Clinical operations for NYP/Columbia.
Responsibilities
Supervises and oversees training activities of up to four phlebotomists according to established policies and procedures including supervision of specimen drawing, handling, ordering and processing of tests.
Supervises front desk operations of the patient care center including appointment scheduling, check in, entering and verifying insurances, monitoring wait time of patients and ensuring patient satisfaction. Resolves patient complaints and troubleshoots lab errors.
Interacts with physician’s offices including troubleshooting problems, answering questions regarding test requisitions, specimen handling and test additions.
Maintains phlebotomy statistics.
Order and maintains supplies inventory
Organizes courier pick up schedule and ensures that specimens are prepared and held according to guidelines and are sent to the appropriate testing facility.
Ensures specimen integrity by enforcing the laboratory’s procedures for collection, handling and processing including use of proper tubes and equipment.
Manages employee performance by coaching, counseling, motivating, and evaluating employees on a continual basis. Implement disciplinary action as needed and in consultation with Management and Human Resources
Liaison with laboratory leadership; attends lab meetings for updates and process improvements; follows all NYPH guidelines including, quality control, quality assurance and safety. Works on special projects as requested.
Performs blood collection as needed.
Qualifications
Two years or more of management experience in practice operations, adult and pediatric phlebotomy laboratory setting.
Phlebotomy certification.
Bachelors of Science degree, ASCP certification preferred.
Strong clinical laboratory medicine knowledge; computer literacy and experience in utilization of laboratory information systems; Strong customer service, communication and organizational skills essential.
Excellent written communication and solid computer skills.
